As responsible citizens, we need to really study and understand the theories, ideas and approaches to our current political situation. We need to understand where we are at right now, see the flaws and move past these ideas to a democracy that works for all of society. Engaging in debate and imagining a new way of doing government needs to happen to restore power and control to the people again. Let us reinvigorate our democratic process and embrace justice. One of the first things to understand is HOW gerrymandering is affecting our state. How it is destroying our legislative process, rigging our elections and taking the voice away from the people. We have to get this fixed. It is imperative.
Let us start with a very important definition. What is Gerrymandering? (per Wikipedia) In the process of setting electoral districts, gerrymandering is a practice that attempts to establish a political advantage for a particular party or group by manipulating district boundaries to create partisan-advantaged districts. The resulting district apportionment is known as a gerrymander; however, that word can also refer to the process.
So, I have included one of the best articles I have seen on the Wisconsin Gerrymandering problem. Written by David Daley for Salon. Here below is the link to that article. It will take you about 10″ to read. Grab a cup of coffee. You will you have your eyes opened! Especially take note of how Gerrymandering is affecting the choices we have. People are frustrated and refusing to run for election because the cards are stacked against them.
I love to listen to podcasts and they are wonderful because you can listen to them when you are busy doing other things, like cleaning the house. This particular podcast is so informative and is part of the Civics 101 podcast series by New Hampshire public radio. Episode 16 is on the topic of Gerrymandering. It is an interview with Mr. Nick Stephanopoulos, the lawyer mentioned in the Salon article.
Once you have read about the State situation and have listened to the podcast to understand Gerrymandering, you can take action by going to the Fair Vote website. This is a problem we have to face and fix.
